Youth Program Options!
Our Youth Ski programs place an emphasis on learning to ski through group games and activities, mixed with technique instruction. Programs are aligned with Cross Country Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model, or LTAD. Parents are encouraged to get involved, through helping out with groups on snow, volunteering for events, or even signing up for one of our Adult Ski or Biathlon programs. Bunnyrabbits (4-5yrs, registered as Jackrabbits), Jackrabbits (5-9yrs), Track Attack (10-13yrs), and Trailblazers (14-16yrs), are great ways for kids to build ski skills, fitness, and friendships. Trailblazers is one of our newer programs, and is recommended for both those who have moved through the Jackrabbit/Track Attack programs (earlier entry, at 12/13yrs), as well as newcomers to the sport (entry at age 14-16yrs). Although learning to train for fitness and local racing is a focus, Trailblazers welcomes everyone who likes to ski and have fun with similar aged peers - including non-racers and those who want to learn Biathlon, and therefore need to learn to Skate ski.
What is a skill development program, or SDP?
These programs are all skill development programs, (SDP) with a focus on recreation and introduction to racing, for those who are interested in racing. Created by Cross Country Canada, they are taught and delivered by experienced local volunteer coaches, through the Martock Nordic Ski Club. A membership in the club is mandatory for all program participants, and also includes membership with Cross Country Ski Nova Scotia. The Jackrabbit Ski League began in Canada more than 20 years ago, and has produced such skiers as Olympians, Becky Scott, Sara Renner, Devon Kershaw, and the list goes on. Although Bunnyrabbits and Jackrabbits are non-competitive programs, there are options for the older skiers to get involved in racing, starting in the Track Attack program.
Where will these programs take place?
Ski Martock is the primary location. The Martock trails are also the 2011 Canada Winter Games trails. All of the Martock program skiers will benefit from the opportunity to ski on these national calibre trails with state of the art snowmaking and grooming. A technical building/clubhouse is located in the Stadium area, where all classes begin and end each Saturday morning.
Waverley MacDonald Sport Park Program: a smaller, additional program for Bunnyrabbits and young Jackrabbits is once again being offered at MacDonald Sport Park, in HRM, also on Saturday mornings.
This is an ideal program for young families who live in the HRM and want an introduction to skiing.

Saturdays January 7-March 10, from 10am-11:30am.
